Phoebe Zhennan, also known as Nanmu (楠木), is a highly revered hardwood native to China. Renowned for its rarity, striking aesthetics, captivating fragrance, remarkable durability, and historical significance, it was once favored by Chinese emperors and nobility.
While not all wood types are suitable for guitar tops due to specific acoustic requirements, I embarked on a journey in 2020 to explore the potential of Phoebe Zhennan.
My ambition was to create a guitar that not only boasted stunning visual appeal on every surface but also met the stringent demands of a high-quality instrument.
Unfortunately, the initial prototype, completed in 2020, experienced a top failure. This setback prompted a thorough reevaluation of my approach and led to the guitar's withdrawal from the market. It remained in its case until 2024.
In October 2024, a chance encounter during a video call with Brazilian music producer and friend, André Cavalcante, reignited my interest in the project.
André expressed keen interest in the guitar and encouraged me to restore it for his upcoming Christmas performance in Rome.
I promptly undertook the restoration, incorporating a revised brace design and a new Phoebe Zhennan top. Completed in November 2024, the guitar was shipped to Rome in time for André's performance.
His captivating solo guitar piece showcased the instrument's exceptional qualities, and a video of this performance is available for your enjoyment.
This unique combination of Phoebe Zhennan and Cocobolo produces a truly remarkable sound: crystal-clear tone, excellent note separation, powerful bass response, and long, flowing sustain for both chords and single notes.
The fingerboard is crafted from a carefully selected piece of Cocobolo, featuring a 44.5mm nut width and a 660mm scale length. Schertler Gold tuners with ebony buttons complete this exquisite instrument.
