The smallest of my standard sizes, this 14" is my interpretation of a 00 size guitar. Even with its small frame, this instrument is packed full of tone. It has a rich bass, an even midrange, and sweet trebles. Although it retains some of the delicate characteristics that these smaller-sized guitars are known for, it projects much further than one might expect. The top, an extremely figured piece of Italian Alpine Spruce, was carefully chosen for its stiffness, density, and Sound Radiation Coefficient to be extremely responsive and dynamic for fingerstyle use on a small-bodied guitar.
This instrument is one of only a couple "spec" guitars I'm able to make per year that are not already headed to a specific client. This guitar will be featured at the 2024 La Conner Guitar Festival. I drew inspiration for this guitar from my childhood love for origami—the japanese art of paper folding. An origami dove is inlaid in the waist area of the back, composed of white mother-of-pearl, gold mother-of-pearl, and black mother-of-pearl to simulate origami folds. The endgraft features a folded-paper motif, as if the Madagascar Rosewood was creased and folded away, exposing the mahogany tail block underneath. The headstock also features an origami motif in mahogany. I chose an intensely bearclaw-figured top as well, as it is reminiscent of some styles of ornate origami paper. I have always loved the art of Origami, and it was a lot of fun to incorporate that into my own art medium.
This guitar also features custom handmade Scheller Gitarrenmechinaken tuning machines, a slightly elevated fretboard, florentine cutaway, and a side soundport.
